Developing the Role of the Primary Science Subject Leader

Good subject leadership has a positive impact on the quality of science teaching in primary schools. You will explore a range of strategies to audit and lead science in your school, understand your role more fully and be able to identify and promote effective primary science. Gain a deeper understanding of the aims of the curriculum, develop your own subject knowledge and identify the role subject leaders’ play in developing a whole school approach to teaching science for KS1 and KS2.

Embedding Working Scientifically

Following on from the introduction to working scientifically, You will be able to: incorporate children’s ideas into your science lessons, plan for science with a creative approach, explore a range of techniques to draw out students ideas and help develop strategies.

Assessment & Progression in Primary Science

Evidence shows that effective Assessment for Learning (AfL) leads to raised attainment. Now that formal recording of levels has been removed, you need to be secure in your understanding of how to make judgements about children’s achievements and progress.

You will be able to use a range of AfL strategies effectively to promote children’s learning, acquire a deeper understanding of progression and make confident and reliable teacher assessment of learning in science and identify children’s next steps.

Embedding Literacy and Science

Following on from the introduction to Literacy and Science, you will explore a range of strategies designed to improve children’s ability to use scientific language. You will be able to maximise the opportunities for developing literacy skills and improving attainment in science by planning lessons in which children communicate science ideas, knowledge and understanding.

Supermarket Science

This practical course will provide you with new ideas for science experiments that will encourage your pupils’ curiosity and develop their understanding. It includes a bank of easy to use practical ideas that you can take away with you to enable your pupils to
conduct experiments in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics and have fun!

By the end of the session you will be able to understand the importance of engaging children in practical work that enables them to make links to everyday life, understand what working scientifically means and know what good teaching and learning in primary science looks like and have a bank of ideas to use with your class.

SECONDARY COURSES

Supporting SEN Students in Science

We want Science to reach every student, including special educational needs and inclusion. We will work out methods and strategies for supporting those students that need extra help. We have plenty of resources to develop schemes of work and an assessment / recording framework for Science. We will  go through examples of good teaching ideas with specific guidance and differentiation ideas for Science. Led by experienced teachers from Frank Wise School and Swiss Cottage Research School.
