Literacy and Science: Embedding

Following on from the introduction to Literacy and Science, you will explore a range of strategies designed to improve children’s ability to use scientific language. You will be able to maximise the opportunities for developing literacy skills and improving attainment in science by planning lessons in which children communicate science ideas, knowledge and understanding.

Primary Science Conference 

The Awe and Wonder of Science. We are thrilled to have secured David Allen and Jules Pottle as key note speakers for this conference. David is a senior lecturer for primary science at the University of Hertfordshire and Jules has just won the ASE book of the year award for The Molliebird. Both David and Jules come with over 20 years experience. A packed day full of exciting science ideas with a workshop on Teaching the Tricky Bits.

Supermarket Science

This practical course will provide you with new ideas for science experiments that will encourage your pupils’ curiosity and develop their understanding. It includes a bank of easy to use practical ideas that you can take away with you to enable your pupils to
conduct experiments in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics and have fun!

By the end of the session you will be able to understand the importance of engaging children in practical work that enables them to make links to everyday life, understand what working scientifically means and know what good teaching and learning in primary science looks like and have a bank of ideas to use with your class.

Primary Science Engagement Day

We are thrilled to have the Science Museum running this Primary Science Conference. Only £20pp for the whole day including lunch and refreshments!

What can you expect? You will use a range of practical activities that will help your students to develop confidence and the skills to engage with and talk about science in the classroom and in their everyday lives. All the activities use easily obtainable materials, so that you can use them in your classroom straightaway.
Content of the course includes:

  • Hands-on activities demonstrating how to work scientifically and develop science skills

  • How to use and apply our engagement planning framework ‘Hook, Inform, Enable, Extend’

  • Approaches to help you plan and facilitate engaging classroom discussions
